Energy Market Overview
by Elaine Levin, Morgan Stanley Smith Barney Global Wealth Man.
Wednesday, October 28, 2:30 pm, Salons 2-4

Oil prices are grinding higher, but oil inventories are bursting in U.S. tankage.  Natural gas prices have recovered, adding two-thirds to their recent low at $2.41, but natural gas in underground storage is nearing a record, more than 15 per cent higher than the 5-year average.  Why the contradiction between price and supply?  Some of it has to do with growth in Asia and some with breakthroughs in natural gas drilling techniques.   Elaine Levin will help us understand some of the reasons that energy prices seem to have diverged from fundamentals of supply and demand.

Keynote: Striving for Perfection
featuring Larry Csonka,
    Super Bowl VIII MVP
Member of the ‘perfect’ 1972 Dolphins
    Pro Football Hall of Famer
    Host/Producer: outdoor adv. program
        ‘North to Alaska’
Thursday, October 29, 8:45 am, Salons 2-4

Larry Csonka will provide an inspiring Keynote Address for the 2009 NORA Conference. NORA attendees will leave the conference with a renewed confidence to strive for perfection in any endeavor.

Larry Csonka and power running became synonymous in the NFL of the 1970’s. As a player with the powerhouse Miami Dolphins he charged so tenaciously through defenses that his name became a household word and his nickname, Zonk, became a new American verb. From 1971-1973, he led the Dolphins to three Super Bowl appearances, earning All-Pro and Pro Bowl honors along the way. He and halfback Jim Kiick were affectionately known as “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid,” and were key players in the Dolphins’ perfect 17-0 season in 1972. Csonka earned the MVP award of the Dolphins’ Super Bowl VIII victory over the Minnesota Vikings by rushing 33 times for 145 yards and 2 touchdowns. In 1973, he was voted Super Athlete of the Year by the Professional Football Writers Association. In 1987, he was enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame in only his second year of eligibility.

Larry continues to work in the “public eye” as host and producer of an outdoor adventure program. He currently hosts and produces “NAPA’s North to Alaska”, which airs on the Versus Network.  These programs showcase Larry’s experience as a fisherman and hunter and his enthusiasm for outdoor sports and conservation.

Larry Csonka has a tremendous story to tell and backs it up with a warm sincere approach that will have you on the edge of your seat. Larry will speak about the game, the players, coaching and starring moments of a great career. You will delight in his humor and leave feeling that they have always known him.

Larry Csonka is more than a retired football player; he is a legend. Larry Csonka will help NORA celebrate 25 years as an organization dedicated to serving the interests of the liquid recycling industry.

Rapid Trend in the Asphalt Industry:  Warm Mix Asphalt: What is it? When will it hit your market? Will it increase or decrease the demand for recycled Fuel Oil?
by TJ Young, T2ASCO
Thursday, October 29, 10:15 am, Salons 2-4

NORA is bringing in asphalt industry expert TJ Young to address the rapid trend from hot mix to warm mix. Young will cover the following items:
•    What is Warm Mix or WMA?
•    Why is it being used in the United States and Canada?
•    Benefits of using WMA for the asphalt producer.
•    Benefits of using WMA for the end-use owner of the pavement.
•    Benefits of using WMA for the paving contractor applying WMA.
•    The different types of WMA approaches currently being used.
•    Actual field experiences in the energy impact of WMA production for asphalt producers in terms of dryer fuel consumption.
•    Regionality of WMA acceptance.
•    Forecasts of WMA production into the future in terms of offsetting traditional HMA production tonnage.
•    The resulting impact on dryer fuel consumption into the future.
•    How to monitor WMA activity in your region.

WMA production will have a significant impact in our industry over the next few years. Young will explore what the impact of the actual fuel savings in WMA production will have on the industry and your business.

All NORA members need to hear what Young has say on the rate of change of fuel consumption over the next 5-10 years in the asphalt industry. Will the WMA trend result in an actual gallon decrease in burner fuel requirements? Is it possible that the rapid trend to WMA may actually increase demand for recycled fuel oil?

Finalized and Emerging Green House Gas (GHG) Rules and Legislation That Could Significantly Impact Members
by Jack Waggener, NORA Senior Adviser
Thursday, October 29, 11:10 am, The Plaza Ballroom

EPA is finalizing the GHG Reporting Regulations for industry and is proposing, drafting, and discussing GHG rules that will likely limit GHG emissions through air emission permits for industry and other sources. Simultaneously, the US Congress is proposing Legislation that will cause reduction in GHG emissions. There will likely be positive and negative impacts to NORA members.

Make sure you attend the NORA conference to learn what the EPA is working on and how it will impact you and your clients. NORA’s representative in DC, Jack Waggener, will get you up to speed on this emerging issue for our industry.

Hedging: How to Protect Against Price Volatility
by Elaine Levin, Morgan Stanley Smith Barney Global Wealth Man.
Friday, October 30, 9:00 am, Salons 2-4

If you are in the used oil business, you know how important it is to understand and manage price volatility. Attendees at the NORA Conference will learn all about hedging and how it may be a tool you can use to minimize your risk related to price volatility.

It is a well known fact that companies today face increased risk from fluctuating energy prices. And when prices are moving up and down, it can take an expensive toll on your bottom line. Many professionals have turned to hedging mechanisms as a way to protect against price volatility.

In this session, Elaine Levin will introduce NORA members to some of the basic concepts of hedging: Why conservative companies hedge, how hedging is different from speculation, and the tools of risk management. She will discuss how futures and options are used by companies to help minimize the risk of major price changes in the oil and natural gas sector.

2010 Hot Mix Asphalt Market Forecast
by Jay Hansen, Vice President Government Affairs for the National Asphalt Pavement Association
Friday, October 30, 9:40 am, Salons 2-4

Jay will provide a complete forecast of the 2010 hot mix asphalt market. Every NORA member will need this information to accurately plan and budget for next year.

Specifically, Jay will review the 2009 highway market for asphalt pavement and provide a forecast for the 2010 market.  Two-thirds of the asphalt pavement market is in publicly funded highways and nearly half of that market is federally funded.

Federal highway funding is a key driver for the HMA market and is affected by the economic stimulus bill enacted earlier this year and the surface transportation reauthorization bill which will not be enacted this year.  These two issues along with state and local highway funding and the private sector markets will impact asphalt pavement production in 2010.

Attendees will get a better understanding of current asphalt pavement production trends and how 2010 looks at this point and time.

With over 300 million gallons of recycled fuel oil being utilized by the HMA market, all NORA members should attend this session Friday morning (October 30th) to gain insight and justification for their own budgeting and planning for 2010.
